SEND in Creative Arts

The strategies that we use to support SEND students in the Creative Arts are created to be inclusive and supportive for all students. They are also designed to help teachers provide clear structure, consistency, and accessibility in the classroom. By implementing these approaches, we aim to reduce barriers to learning, promote engagement, and ensure every student can discover their creativity and thrive.

Clear Communication

  • We use clear, unambiguous language and provide clear instructions upfront.
  • We give advance warning of any changes to routines or activities (whenever possible).
  • We establish and maintain an explicit classroom routine.

Visual and Structured Support

  • Power points use pictures and visuals alongside key vocabulary (dual coding).
  • Tasks are structured in three-parts (e.g., First, Next, Then).
  • We create word banks and sentence starters that can be used during lessons.

Lesson Structure and Scaffolding

  • Learning episodes are structured into three smaller, manageable goals. Direct instruction, Guided instruction and Independent Work. We often offer a whiteboard or a task sheet.
  • Writing tasks are scaffolded with sentence starters, writing frames, and planning sheets.
  • We allow additional processing time (approximately 5 seconds) before asking questions.

Relationships and Consistency

  • We strive to develop supportive relationships with students, we start afresh each lesson.
  • We are consistent in applying rewards and sanctions to offer challenge.
  • We are committed to making contact and communication with parents/carers to ensure that our students know that we care.
  • We actively encourage students that may have additional needs to engage in extra-curricular clubs and activities.
